Court hears how 'Rochdale sex gang targeted girls' (2/22/2012 8:07:29 PM)
A group of 11 men plied girls as young as 13 with drink and drugs so they could use them for sex, a court has heard. The five girls, who were aged between 13 and 15 when the alleged abuse began, were passed around by the men "who acted together to sexually exploit the girls", a trial at Liverpool Crown Court was told. All the girls were from broken homes and one was in care. Rachel Smith, opening the case for the prosecution, told the jury of three men and nine women: "Some of you may find what you are about to hear distressing. The events and circumstances described by the girls are at best saddening and at worst shocking in places. "No child should be exploited as these girls say they were." The court heard that some of the girls were raped and physically assaulted and some were forced to have sex with "several men in a day, several times a week". The offences are said to have happened in and around Rochdale, Greater Manchester, in 2008 and 2009.
Fake Drugs Increasing On The Net And Finding Their Way Into Legitimate Supplies (2/22/2012 7:24:02 PM)
Fake drugs are increasingly being sold on the Internet in a global counterfeit medicines market that has doubled in the last five years to more than $75 million. The medicines, many of which are life-threatening, have even turned up in the legitimate supply chain and found their way into pharmacies, according a review by Dr Graham Jackson and colleagues published in the March issue of the IJCP, the International Journal of Clinical Practice...

In this week's PLoS Medicine, Michael Delves of Imperial College London, UK and colleagues compare the activity of 50 current and experimental antimalarials against liver, sexual blood, and mosquito stages of selected human and nonhuman parasite species, including Plasmodium falciparum, Plasmodium berghei, and Plasmodium yoelii. These results provide a valuable guide to help researchers decide which drugs and compounds show most promise as potential future antimalarial drugs for blocking the transmission of malaria...
A Mechanism To Improve Learning And Memory (2/22/2012 11:04:02 AM)
There are a number of drugs and experimental conditions that can block cognitive function and impair learning and memory. However, scientists have recently shown that some drugs can actually improve cognitive function, which may have implications for our understanding of cognitive disorders such as Alzheimer's disease. The new research is reported 21 February in the open-access journal PLoS Biology. The study, led by Drs. Jose A...
Reformulated Imatinib Eliminates Morphine Tolerance In Lab Studies (2/22/2012 9:24:19 AM)
By reformulating the common cancer drug imatinib (Gleevec®), researchers have eliminated morphine tolerance in rats - an important step toward improving the effectiveness of chronic pain management in patients, according to researchers at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center. Narcotics such as morphine are a mainstay of chronic pain treatment. Over time, tolerance to the pain-relieving effects of these drugs can develop, requiring increasing doses to control pain. In some cases, narcotics become ineffective...

The substitution of brand-name antiepileptic drugs with cheaper generic equivalents has been an ongoing point of contention among doctors, federal officials and people with epilepsy. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration claims generic antiepileptic drugs have the same dosage, purity and strength as their brand-name counterparts and the two are interchangeable. But doctors and people with epilepsy remain concerned, citing widespread reports of individuals suffering seizures after switching medication...
Faulty Fat Sensor Implicated In Obesity And Liver Disease (2/21/2012 10:24:14 AM)

Drugs targeting an enzyme involved in inflammation might offer a new avenue for treating certain lung cancers, according to a new study by scientists at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies. The scientists discovered that blocking the activity of the enzyme IKK2, which helps activate the body's inflammation response, slowed the growth of tumors in mice with lung cancer and increased their lifespan. The findings, reported in Nature Cell Biology, suggest that drugs that hinder the ability of the enzyme to command cellular activity might prove effective as lung cancer therapies...

New Method Makes It Easier To Treat Prostate And Pancreatic Cancer (2/17/2012 10:25:08 AM)
Laser light in combination with certain drugs - known as photodynamic therapy - can destroy cancer tumours, but is today used mostly to cure skin cancer. The reason that internal tumours are not treated with the method is that the technology does not exist to check that the precise amount of light is administered. However, software developed by researchers in atomic physics at Lund University in Sweden looks like being able to solve the problem...

However, there are currently lucrative benefits in place set by the regulatory bodies that reward R&D efforts for orphan drugs by ensuring less intense competition, faster and less expensive development, protocol assistance and lower marketing expenses. In order to discuss major concerns, the newest solutions and challenges resulting from these tendencies, Fleming Europe has organized its 2nd Annual Orphan Drug Congress 2012...

Molecule Is Important Step Towards Creating Drugs That Can Go After Rogue DNA Directly (2/16/2012 11:04:16 AM)
Chemists at The University of Texas at Austin have created a molecule that's so good at tangling itself inside the double helix of a DNA sequence that it can stay there for up to 16 days before the DNA liberates itself, much longer than any other molecule reported. It's an important step along the path to someday creating drugs that can go after rogue DNA directly. Such drugs would be revolutionary in the treatment of genetic diseases, cancer or retroviruses such as HIV, which incorporate viral DNA directly into the body's DNA...

Hepatitis Viruses Activated By Stress In Cells (2/15/2012 10:24:45 AM)
People who have received a donor organ need lifelong immunosuppressant drugs to keep their immune system from attacking the foreign tissue. However, with a suppressed immune system, many infectious agents turn into a threat. Infections such as with human cytomegalovirus and a certain type of human polyomavirus frequently cause complications in transplant recipients. For these patients it would therefore be particularly beneficial to have substances that suppress the immune system and exert an antiviral activity at the same time - thus killing two birds with one stone...
Quest For Cancer Treatments Strengthened By Cell Discovery (2/15/2012 9:24:06 AM)
Fresh insights into how our cells multiply could help scientists develop drugs to treat cancer. Researchers have gained better understanding of the workings of two key proteins that control cell division. This process must be carried out accurately to keep cells healthy, and when it goes out of control, it can lead to cancer. The study, led by the University of Edinburgh, could contribute to the development of new drugs that stop cancerous cells multiplying and so prevent the spread of the disease...

Cochlear Implants Can Be Safe And Effective For Kidney Transplant Patients Who Lose Their Hearing (2/13/2012 1:45:19 PM)
Some people who undergo organ transplants lose their hearing as a side-effect of the antibiotics and immunosuppressive drugs they have to take. And while cochlear implants that restore hearing can raise the risk of getting ear infections and are thus not normally considered for patients with weakened immune systems, Kenneth Charles Iverson and Brian John McKinnon, of the Medical College of Georgia (MCG) at Georgia Health Sciences University in Augusta, suggest that under certain conditions they may be safe and effective for kidney transplant patients...
